Let's get one thing straight upfront — we're a wax melt brand, so we are absolutely not a neutral party here. But we also believe in being honest with the people who buy from us, so we're going to give candles a fair hearing before we explain why wax melts win. Spoiler: they win. But read on.
First — what candles actually do well
Candles have been around forever and there's a reason for that. A well-made candle with a good flame is genuinely one of the most atmospheric things you can put in a room. The visual warmth of a live flame — the flicker, the glow, the way it catches a room at night — is something that's hard to replicate.
A premium candle in beautiful packaging also makes an incredible gift. There's a perceived luxury to a well-presented candle that's hard to argue with. And for some people, the ritual of lighting a candle, the moment of striking a match, is genuinely part of the whole experience.
If we're being completely honest — when we want a candle, we reach for Glasshouse Fragrances. They're premium, beautifully made, and genuinely iconic across Australia. And we cannot resist a Peter Alexander Glasshouse collab — specifically A Tahaa Affair, their vanilla caramel coconut scent that also happens to be the Peter Alexander signature fragrance. It's stunning. We love it. We also think our Vanilla Caramel wax melt gives it a serious run for its money at a fraction of the price — but that's for you to decide.
So yes — candles are beautiful, atmospheric, and genuinely lovely. We said it. Now here's everything else.
The head to head
Let's go category by category and see how they actually stack up:
| Category | 🕯️ Candles | ✦ Wax Melts |
|---|---|---|
| Scent strength | Varies wildly. Cheap candles barely throw scent. Even premium ones can tunnel and lose performance over time. | Maximum fragrance load in every pack. The scent fills the room — that's the whole point. |
| Scent variety | You're committed to one scent per candle. Switching means buying a whole new one and starting again. | Switch scents whenever you feel like it. Wipe the dish, drop something new in. Done in 30 seconds. |
| Scent blending | Not really possible without buying multiple candles and hoping they work together. | Drop two different melts in together and create your own signature blend. Easy and genuinely fun. |
| Value | A premium candle can cost $40–80+ for a single scent. Once it's done, it's done. | More fragrance, more flexibility, more variety for significantly less per scent. |
| Safety | Open flame, dripping wax, soot, carbon — needs attention and a clear surface at all times. | Tea light burner option has an open flame too — but the electric warmer option is fully flameless. Your call. Either way, never leave an open flame unattended. |
| Mess | Dripping wax, soot marks on walls, wax pooling issues. The cleanup is very real. | Clamshell packs snap shut neatly. No drips, no mess. The wax stays exactly where it's supposed to. |
| Atmosphere | A beautiful candle flame is genuinely stunning. Visual warmth that's difficult to replicate. | Tea light burner gives you the flame atmosphere too. Electric warmer trades the flame for convenience. |
| Gifting | Candles gift beautifully — strong perceived luxury. Hard to beat on presentation. | Jaspa gift boxes are just as beautiful — and the recipient gets far more variety and value for their money. |
The honest verdict
Most of our customers aren't choosing between candles and wax melts — they have both. Candles for occasions when the visual atmosphere really matters, wax melts for everyday fragrance because the performance and flexibility is genuinely better. There's absolutely room for both in a well-scented home.
Getting the most from your wax melts
Whether you're new to wax melts or switching from candles, a few things make a real difference:
-
Pick your warmer based on what you want
Tea light burner gives you a beautiful open flame and a stronger initial scent throw. Electric warmer is flameless, better around kids and pets, and gives a slower, steadier fragrance build. Both work brilliantly — it's about what suits your space and how you live.
-
Top up instead of starting over
When your scent starts to fade, add a fresh cube on top, squeeze in a little liquid wax melt to boost it, or give the melted wax a gentle stir to reactivate the fragrance. There's plenty of life left in most melts before they're truly done.
-
Switch scents without wasting anything
When the wax has gone solid, light your tea light or switch on the warmer for just a moment — enough to slightly warm the base of the wax so it separates cleanly from the dish. Then pop it out in one piece. Store it somewhere cool and it's ready to use again whenever you want it.
-
Liquid melts — warm gently, don't overheat
Liquid melts are already in their fragrance-ready state, so they don't need much heat to get going. A small tea light or a low electric warmer is all you need. Too much heat and you risk burning off the fragrance before you get to enjoy it. Low and slow is the move — you'll get a better throw and the scent will last much longer.
-
Blend for your own signature scent
Two melts in the dish at once. Fruity plus gourmand, musky plus warm — some combinations are genuinely incredible and no candle can give you that flexibility. Start with scents from the same family and experiment from there.
-
If you stop smelling it — step outside
Your nose adjusts to scents you've been around for a while and stops registering them — olfactory fatigue. Step outside for a couple of minutes then come back in. You'll smell it again immediately. The melt is doing its job, your nose just needed a reset.
Want to take the top-up trick to the next level? Squeeze a little Jaspa liquid melt directly into the dish alongside your wax cubes. Liquid melts carry more fragrance and blend beautifully with melted wax. Instant boost, incredible throw, and switching scents is even faster.
